The Formulas of Popular Fiction PDF
By:Anna Faktorovich
Published on 2014-09-08 by McFarland

|Anna Faktorovich has written an impressive study of genre writing. It is comprehensively informative and enticing on an intellectual level and simultaneously encouraging and useful to those embarking on a writing career. Formulaic authorship is not as creatively rewarding as producing Lolita or King Lear, but those future Luke Skywalkers and Harry Potters will pay the rent.|--Robert Hauptman, editor, Journal of Information Ethics. This book creates a taxonomy for the major bestselling fictional genres: romance (e.g., authors Heyer, Cartland, Woodiwiss and Roberts), religious and inspirational (Corelli and Douglas), mystery and detective (Conan Doyle, Christie and Mankell), and science fiction, horror and fantasy (Wells, Tolkien, Orwell, Niven, King and Rowling). Chapters look at a genre from its roots to its most recent works. The structural patterns in the plot, characters and setting of these genres are then explained. The book also provides a critique of currently popular hyper-formulaic, hack, unliterary writings that have multiplied in recent decades. Special topics such as the publishing oligopoly and the resulting homogeneity among bestselling works and the steady movement from literary to unliterary fiction are also examined.

The Case Against Satan PDF
By:Ray Russell
Published on 2015-10-13 by Penguin

Before The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby, there was The Case Against Satan By the twentieth century, the exorcism had all but vanished, wiped out by modern science and psychology. But Ray Russell—praised by Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro as a sophisticated practitioner of Gothic fiction—resurrected the ritual with his classic 1962 horror novel, The Case Against Satan, giving new rise to the exorcism on page, screen, and even in real life. Teenager Susan Garth was “a clean-talking sweet little girl” of high school age before she started having “fits”—a sudden aversion to churches and a newfound fondness for vulgarity. Then one night, she strips in front of the parish priest and sinks her nails into his throat. If not madness, then the answer must be demonic possession. To vanquish the Devil, Bishop Crimmings recruits Father Gregory Sargent, a younger priest with a taste for modern ideas and brandy. As the two men fight not just the darkness tormenting Susan but also one another, a soul-chilling revelation lurks in the shadows—one that knows that the darkest evil goes by many names. Contemporary Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Poetry PDF
By:Scott E. Green
Published on 1989-01-01 by Greenwood Publishing Group

This book seeks to document a basic proposition, namely that poetry is a major form of expression for writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. It is not a history of poetry in these three genres, yet it nevertheless provides the reader with a sense of the roots and current trends in science fiction, fantasy, and horror poetry. Green provides evidence that there are, in fact, opportunities for publishing such genre poetry in both commercial and small press magazines.

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction PDF
By:John Clute,Peter Nicholls
Published on 1999 by Orbit Books

The first edition of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction was published in 1979 and was immediately hailed as a classic work of reference. This edition, now available in paperback, has taken years to prepare and is much more than a simple updating. The world of science fiction in the 1990s is much more complex than it was in the 1970s. The advent of game worlds, shared worlds, graphic novels, film and TV spin-offs, technothrillers, SF horror and much more has meant that the book has been expanded dramatically to cope with the complexities and changes in the genre. It now contains well over 4,300 entries - a staggering 1,500 more than the original - and, at 1.3 million words, it is over half a million words longer than the first edition. Written and compiled by a team of editors with unparalleled collective experience in the field, it is an invaluable reference work for any fan of imaginative fiction.

Problem Novels PDF
By:Anna Maria Jones
Published on 2007 by Ohio State University Press

|In Problem Novels, Anna Maria Jones argues that, far from participating |invisibly| in disciplinary regimes, many Victorian novels articulate sophisticated theories about the role of the novel in the formation of the self. In fact, it is rare to find a Victorian novel in which questions about the danger or utility of novel reading are not embedded within the narrative. In other words, one of the stories that the Victorian novel tells, over and over again, is the story of what novels do to readers. This story occurs in moments that call attention to the reader's engagement with the text.| |In chapters on Wilkie Collins, Anthony Trollope, and George Meredith, Jones examines |problem novels| - that is, novels that both narrate and invite problematic reading as part of their theorizing of cultural production. Problem Novels demonstrates that these works posit a culturally embedded, sensationally susceptible reader and, at the same time, present a methodology for critical engagement with cultural texts. Thus, the novels theorize, paradoxically, a reader who is both unconsciously interpellated and critically empowered. And, Jones argues, it is this paradoxical construction of the unconscious/critical subject that re-emerges in the theoretical paradigms of Victorian cultural studies scholarship. Indeed, as Problem Novels shows, Victorianists' attachments to critical |detective work| closely resemble the sensational attachments that we assume shaped Victorian novel readers.|--BOOK JACKET.

The Oxford Handbook of Science Fiction PDF
By:Rob Latham
Published on 2014 by Oxford Handbooks

The Oxford Handbook of Science Fiction attempts to descry the historical and cultural contours of SF in the wake of technoculture studies. Rather than treating the genre as an isolated aesthetic formation, it examines SF's many lines of cross-pollination with technocultural realities since itsinception in the nineteenth century, showing how SF's unique history and subcultural identity has been constructed in ongoing dialogue with popular discourses of science and technology. The volume consists of four broadly themed sections, each divided into eleven chapters. Section I, |Science Fiction as Genre,| considers the internal history of SF literature, examining its characteristic aesthetic and ideological modalities, its animating social and commercial institutions, and itsrelationship to other fantastic genres. Section II, |Science Fiction as Medium,| presents a more diverse and ramified understanding of what constitutes the field as a mode of artistic and pop-cultural expression, canvassing extra-literary manifestations of SF ranging from film and television tovideogames and hypertext to music and theme parks. Section III, |Science Fiction as Culture,| examines the genre in relation to cultural issues and contexts that have influenced it and been influenced by it in turn, the goal being to see how SF has helped to constitute and define important(sub)cultural groupings, social movements, and historical developments during the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. Finally, Section IV, |Science Fiction as Worldview,| explores SF as a mode of thought and its intersection with other philosophies and large-scale perspectives on theworld, from the Enlightenment to the present day.

Worlds of Wonder PDF
By:Camille R. La Bossière,Jean-François Leroux
Published on 2004 by University of Ottawa Press

Science fiction and fantasy have come to be popular genres for Canadian writers. The work of Margaret Atwood, for example, contains many allusions to science fiction; indeed she has written novels that work explicitly with the tropes of the genre. While some science fiction and fantasy texts are concerned with little more than brains in jars on a distant planet or similarly fabulous Fairy-land fare, many works in both genres have contained penetrating social commentary and cutting-edge narrative techniques. Worlds of Wonder brings together an array of scholarship on Canadian Science fiction and fantasy as varied as the genres themselves. Collectively, the contributors strive to define the ethos particular to Canadians working in the genres. They pay particular attention to narrative modes, and there are many allusions to such theorists of 'grand narratives' as Northrop Frye, Frank Kermode, Jean-François Lyotard, and Fredric Jameson. Amongst many things, the essays demonstrate that duality and ambiguity are defining characteristics of Canadian science fiction and fantasy.

From indie horror author and bestselling sensation Ania Ahlborn, this brand-new supernatural thriller questions: how far would you go for success, and what would you be capable of if the promise of forever was real? With his marriage on the rocks and his life in shambles, washed up crime writer Lucas Graham is desperate for a comeback. So when he's promised exclusive access to notorious cult leader and death row inmate Jeffrey Halcomb, the opportunity is too good to pass up. Lucas leaves New York for the scene of the crime—a split-level farmhouse on the gray-sanded beach of Washington State—a house whose foundation is steeped in the blood of Halcomb's diviners; runaways who, thirty years prior, were drawn to his message of family, unity, and unconditional love. Lucas wants to tell the real story of Halcomb's faithful departed, but when Halcomb goes back on his promise of granting Lucas exclusive information on the case, he's left to put the story together on his own. Except he is not alone. For Jeffrey Halcomb promised his devout eternal life…and within these walls, they're far from dead.

Published on 2000-09 by Bearmanor Media

The working cowboy would never be found in great abundance in the pulp magazines, or in the dime novels, in hard- or soft-cover books, or something else. A man for all seasons, the cowboy of fiction survives because of the genius of first-rate authors like James Fenimore Cooper and such modern masters of the art as Fred Glidden (Luke Short) and Ernest Haycox, and in spite of the works of hacks like Edward Judson (Ned Buntline). This book covers a generation, the pulp era of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s of pulp fictioneers who cranked out millions, perhaps even hundreds of millions, or words for the several hundred western pulp magazines then active. It also provides a short history of the origins of Western American fiction, plus a brief commentary on the genres evolution into the paperback era.

Different Genres and Literary Elements in Jeanette Wintersons 'The Passion' PDF
By:Anne-Kathrin Wilde
Published on 2009-07 by GRIN Verlag

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Bayreuth, course: Female Identities in the History of British Fiction, language: English, abstract: Jeanette Winterson's novels are a combination of history, fictional stories, fairy-tales and female romance. She has an experimental style which approaches many readers in particular women. The genre could be called post-modern fiction as it shows a lot of post-modern writing techniques such as intertextuality, parody, self-reflectivity and the rewriting of history. In this paper the different literary genres which Jeanette Winterson knows to combine should be presented by the example of the novel The Passion, written in 1987. Using literary devices, generic details should be analysed which make it possible to categorize The Passion according to the different genres.
